Tabu started her film career as a child artist Dev Anand's Hum Naujawan. The film does not make the phenomenal box-office, and because she was not the lead actress, Tabu received little kilometers. The first film she signed on as lead actress was' Prem ', but eventually, "Pehla Pehla Pyar' released first and launched her as leading lady. Obviously, defining her celluloid debut is still a difficult issue. But from the moment she appeared on, they hit home like a real stunner that do not need a nose job to look good. Although the first few movies she signed on the less said the better, they showed a marked talent for acting. It took her about two years to go through the run-of-the mill rolls and more serious spheres of action to implement, but in her formative years as an actress, they learn the Hindi film base inside and out.
Tabu Comic roles with the likes of Govinda and Rishi Kapoor were supplemented by a more restrained performances opposite Sunny Deol and Ajay Devgun. The period that they are fully acquainted themselves with commercial cinema was crucial, for it was at this point that it acquired the freedom to choose their own scripts. Once established as a good actress (and a reliable draw at the box office), Tabu started experimenting. Tabu introduced alternative (for lack of better word) cinema in steps. She began with Kala-Pani, a Southern-produced film about the liberation and followed it up with a good performance in Kadalan Desam, another Tamil blockbuster. In Jeet she was cast opposite Sunny Deol. The film was in no way be described as serious cinema, probably as a strictly commercial film as a Manmohan Desai hack.
However, Tabu performance won the admiration of many, as they overshadowed the lead actress, Karishma Kapoor even though she had in the movie was little more than a character role. But the highlight of her film career was her performance in Maachis. As a young Sikh girl forced into a stance in the background of the Punjab terrorism period, Tabu equaled the performance of the skill of its director Gulzar. Maachis is one of the few joint efforts of a commercial actress in the Hindi film industry to branch into serious cinema.
While Tabu 'Maachis' established her as an excellent actress, Virasat confirmed that fact. Again, in a small role, Tabu effectively eclipsed all the other cast members. In Border, Tabu has won recognition for its small but perfectly neglected role as wife of an army officer. Darmiyaan, directed by Kalpana Lajmi is an art film - not the kind that would associate itself with the average Bollywood starlet, nor the kind of movie that commercial film actresses would otherwise exhaust their resources on. Tabu has a character role in the film, and stood to the will of Kiron Kher and Arif Zakaria - no small task. Today she is very choosy about her films and insists on doing a few, but select films a year. She has already carved a niche for itself in the Indian film industry as an actress very seriously. And if the kind of work they come up with an indication of things to come, we have much more to look forward to Tabu.
